Cavities can appear anywhere on the teeth, even between them. These are known as interproximal cavities. Interproximal cavities can be difficult to prevent because of the difficulty cleaning between your teeth, and they can be just as hard to diagnose without the help of your dentist.

Here’s what you need to know about reducing your risk of developing this type of sneaky dental damage, and how to tell if your teeth could already have a problem.

Preventing Interproximal Cavities

Interproximal cavities are easier to prevent than you might think. In fact, that’s why your dentist recommends flossing every single day. Flossing can reach 30 percent of the surface of your teeth that cannot be reached by brushing alone, especially in between them!

Additionally, be sure to brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, and eat a diet that is low in sugar and carbohydrates, both of which are favorite snacks of cavity-causing oral bacteria.

Signs of Interproximal Cavities

While it’s not possible to see an interproximal cavity without an X-Ray, your teeth may still give a few warning signs if they have them. These often include:

  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Sensitivity to sweets
  • Difficulty / pain chewing with the affected tooth

How Are Interproximal Cavities Treated?

If you are diagnosed with an interproximal cavity, the good news is that it is still usually treatable with a traditional filling, crown, or root canal. In some cases, however, your tooth may require an extraction if the cavity has become too severe to repair. Thus, never ignore tooth pain, and don’t skip your biannual exam and cleaning appointments.
